Dining Room Chair Back Covers

Curved-Back Covers Chairs with curved backs present minor challenges that even beginning sewers can overcome. Trace the curve on a piece of kraft paper or old sheet to make an easy pattern for sewing the main seam. So long as the bottom of the back is the same width or slightly wider than the curved top, you are still making a pillow-case. For a slippery curved top, like the top of a folding chair, peel-and-stick hook-and-loop tape can secure the bottom edges of the cover to the bottom edges of the chair back. For a curved back with a narrower bottom than top, sew straight seams down from the widest point and add ribbon or self-ties to gather excess fullness. For an intricate curve, some sewers make separate front and back covers, tying them at intervals all the way around the chair back.

Choosing Fabrics for Chair Backs Fabric choices depend on your overall dining room decor and how often you plan to use the chair covers. For permanent use, choose fabrics with a tight weave, like damask, jacquard, twill, broadcloth or cotton/polyester blends, to stand up to steady wear. If you serve more family than company dinners, you may want to choose a washable fabric. For special occasions, velvet or metallic fabrics are a bit harder to work with but add a touch of glamor. A quick way to create holiday or other special-occasion covers is with felt, which can be glued as well as sewed.

Creating Your Own Look Spark up a plain pull-on style cover by edging the bottom with lace, fringe or braid. Make the back side of your cover slightly longer than the front for a tailored hanging skirt; add a ruffle for added interest. Using a fabric of homespun, twill or chintz weight, sew a single long strip that both hangs over the back and extends over the chair seat like a runner. This look can be particularly effective on previously upholstered chairs. Enliven plain permanent covers with a series of seasonally-based wide tie-on sashes, adding spring flowers and fall leaves to your decor. Use glitter and beads to trim a single cover that adorns the chair of the guest of honor at a birthday party. Let your imagination be your guide.

I was so excited to get my order of these covers however, I was very disappointed to find that they do not fit my dining room chairs. It would be helpful to have the full specs for this product. The top of the backs of my chairs is a little wider than some and these do not fit. It would have been great to know what the dimensions were prior to ordering 10 of these and now having to return and find new ones that will fit. They are very nice quality and fully lined which is an added bonus. Even though I have to return them, I would recommend to others. Just be sure that your chairs are the same width from the bottom to the top of the back of chairs.
